To protect and preserve research data at UVA, and comply with funding requirements for government agencies, UVA now has a university-wide license to LabArchives, an electronic lab notebook platform.
LabArchives helps researchers manage the results of their research efforts, record and document research processes and procedures, and manage digital research data in way that increase reproducibility, efficiency, collaboration, searchability, and security. It is a cloud-based platform that is securely accessible via the Internet from anywhere in the world, using computers and mobile devices.
Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) allow users to record data in any file format, collaborate within their group and lab, and retain a complete history of the data. All data and activity in LabArchives is searchable and auditable, allowing users to prove discovery, apply for grants, and establish compliance.
Please note that HIPAA Protected Health Information (PHI) data, FERPA data or other highly restricted, sensitive data (e.g., passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) cannot be stored in any ELN affiliated with the UVA enterprise license for LabArchives.
Effective July 1, 2025, UVA will require all researchers with NIH funding to use LabArchives.
All NIH federally funded research data related to published work at UVA must either be stored on the LabArchives platform or include a reference to its location if stored elsewhere. You can find more about the minimum requirements of the use of the platform at UVA on the LabArchives Compliance page.
While not required if you are not NIH funded, all UVA investigators with federal funding are strongly encouraged to use LabArchives to store or point to a location where your research data is stored. If you need assistance with using LabArchives, please reach out to the Office of the Vice President for Research at [email protected].
Accessing LabArchives
All faculty, students, and staff with a valid UVA email may create a LabArchives account. In accordance with UVA policy, ownership of any new notebook will be assigned to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the lab or project, or to a faculty member. Please use the links below to set up your LabArchives account.
Additional Resources
Both the University Library and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library have data management specialists who provide support for developing and implementing Data Management and Sharing Plans as required by the NIH.
Access to LabArchives has been provided in partnership by the Office of the Vice President of Research, the University of Virginia Library, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.
